Stewardship: The Amount is Not Important
Hello, my name is Ron Blue. We’ve been talking a lot about stewardship over the last several weeks, and we’re going to keep talking about it as time goes on. But the point of stewardship that I want to talk about today is that the amount is not important. In other words: you don’t become a steward; you are a steward. So, if I have just a little bit, I’m a steward. If I have a lot, I’m a steward. I accept the idea, the reality, the belief that God has given me everything, including time. And, all of us have the same amount of time, no matter how much money we have. So, I am a steward over my time, I am a steward over my unique position in life, I am a steward over the relationships that God has given me, I am a steward over the finances He’s given me, I’m a steward over my family, I’m a steward over my business, I’m a steward over everything. So, I don’t become a steward, I am a steward.
In Matthew 25, we have the Parable of the Talents. One of the things that has impressed me about that parable is this: the one who had five talents doubled the talents, and the master said to him, “Well done, good and faithful servant, you’ve been faithful with a few things, now I will put you in charge of many things. Come and enter the joy of your master.” The one who had the two talents doubled the two talents, so he had four talents as compared to the one who ended up with ten talents. The master said to the one with the four talents, “Well done, good and faithful servant, you’ve been faithful with a few things” – (He said) few in both cases, even though one had two and a half times what the other one had.
Maybe it’s two and a half times the amount of time, maybe it’s two and a half times the amount of money, and maybe it’s two and a half times the amount of relationships. But the master said the identical words to both of them: “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful with a few things, now I will put you in charge of many things. Come and enter the joy of your master.” There were identical responses, even though the amounts were totally different. So the amount is not the issue. I am a steward, period..
