What is your perspective on retirement?
Hello, my name is Ron Blue, and I’d like to talk just a couple of minutes here about retirement. You know, it seems in America today that the American Dream is that I can retire, and retirement is really defined as quitting. I no longer have to go to the office; I no longer have to work. And so, what people do is they think, “If I can accumulate enough money that my retirement funds will support me, then I can do whatever I want. I can retire.” I would like to suggest to you that I don’t find the word “retirement” in the Bible. I don’t find any examples of people who quit in the Bible. So, I would like for you to think of it this way: I’m never, ever going to retire, but I might be “re-hired.” In other words, what is the next step that God has for you? Maybe you have achieved financial independence, or maybe you are going to achieve financial independence. That just then frees you up for another form of ministry. So, it’s never retirement. God never quits. Jesus said, “I have finished the work you’ve given me to do,” and He was 33 years old, but He finished the work. And, I know that I am finished when I die. But, I’m not finished before I die. I might change vocations. As a matter of fact, I’ve had five careers in my life. And, I don’t know whether I’m on my last career or not; that’s really up to God. So don’t think of it as “retirement.” Think of it as “re-hirement.” What is the next step that God may have for you?
