Is the American economy resettling itself, and what does that mean to our way of life?
Hello, my name is Ron Blue and I’ve been asked the question, “is the American economy resettling itself, and what does that mean to the American way of life?” That’s a really, really good question. The answer to it is that I do believe that the economy is resettling itself.
You know, there has been a violation of a Biblical principle: “The borrower becomes the lender’s slave” (Proverbs 22:7, NASB) (that’s true) and, “The wicked man borrows and does not repay.” (Psalm 37:21 NIV) So, what is going on now is yes, there is a resettling. We had overinflated a lot of things because we had tried to borrow our way to prosperity. I’m talking about families, I’m talking about businesses, and I’m really talking about our government also. There is always a resettling that has to occur at some point. You can go back thousands of years in history and look at every economy, and no matter what the type of economy, when you’ve violated Biblical principles, there will be a resettling; there will be a coming back to the norm, if you will.
So, what does that mean to the American way of life? Well, I think it means this: we need to take a good, hard look at where we are spending our money. What billboards tell me, what television tells me, what the newspaper tells me, and what the so-called experts tell me may not be true. There may not be a way of life, a standard of living that I have a right to.
I need to take a look at what has God given me. I need to live within my income and not try to borrow my way into contentment, because you can’t, and not try to borrow my way into prosperity, because you can’t. So, yes, I do think we are going through a resettling. I know that if you’ve lost your job it is even more than a resettling. However, I would suggest to you that what you need to do is the only thing that you can do: take a look at where you’re spending your money and don’t try to borrow your way out of your problems.
